Bruce Cooper

Bruce Cooper

Life Member from 2008

Bruce Cooper has been a member of WHO since its inception, being part of the setup of the club. As such, Bruce has fulfilled many roles, notable for his great contributions as Mapping Officer. His skills have been so well regarded that he often was called upon by other clubs to be  Controller at major events. Bruce was awarded the Hank Award in 2008 for his contributions as mapping officer, QBIII vettor, and organising and planning a summer series, amongst other things.

Chris Crane

Chris Crane was highly dedicated to WHO acting as club Secretary for 27 years and club Statistician for 8, working across 9 different presidents in his time as Secretary. For his contributions he was awarded 9 Hank Awards. Chris regularly volunteered in organising major events like Turkey Trots and Sydney Sprint Series and contributed to many others including Easter08 Carnival and JWOC07. He was a great contributor to club spirit and a friend to many. Ian Miller remembers that they “used to have sessions at Chris’s place to prepare for major events doing tasks that are no longer needed such as bagging maps”.

Ted Mulherin

Ted Mulherin

Ted Mulherin was President from 2003-2010. Under his presidency WHO won Club-of-the-Year from ONSW. He was the infrastructure and equipment manager fro JWOC07 and Easter 08. These included 14 separate events in 2007 over 9 consecutive days for JWOC and Australian Champs in Dubbo and surrounding location and followed up in 2008, with all events in the Easter carnival. In 2014, Ted was WHO’s Eventor Administrator. He has organised many events including Turkey Trot, Summer Series, QBIII, and sprint events and has been controller or planner for others including Schools Championship events. Ted is an expert in OCAD and SI programming, regularly providing assistance in O hardware and software related tasks and helping to train others in their use. He regularly helps run events, providing relief to organisers.

Janet Morris

Janet Morris

Life Member from 2017

Orienteering since 1983 Janet Morris was awarded life membership in 2017 and has a long history of outstanding contributions to WHO. She is particularly known for her extensive and expert map work. Her name is on over 50 maps and she also maintains the WHO map library. Janet was also a driving force behind the initiative to bring orienteering westward by co-coordinating Western Sydney Summer Series, successfully expanding the reach of orienteering and attracting many new members. Janet’s great contribution to WHO and orienteering has been recognised by many awards including nine Hank van Oost Awards, and a Sports NSW Community Sports Distinguished Long Service Award.

Barry Hanlon

Barry Hanlon

Barry Hanlon has been a great contributor to WHO, being the Web Master for 20 years regularly updating and maintaining the WHO website. He also has made great contributions in mapping, creating base maps, and assessing new areas for orienteering maps. Barry has also aided in organising and setting countless courses including the first Turkey Trot. Barry’s dedication to WHO has been recognised across 9 Hank Awards. Barry’s love for orienteering has taken him around the globe, including to Kazakhstan where he organised for over 30 Australian orienteers to participate in APOC (Asia Pacific Orienteering Championships). 

Steve Dunlop

Steve Dunlop

Life Member from 2023

Steve Dunlop, like Bruce Cooper, has been involved in the conception of the Club, with the first meeting at his house! He has been WHO’s unwavering equipment officer for 15 years and was the Club Captain/Vice President for two years in 2009-2010. He has also been the Treasurer in 1983-1984 and President in 1985-1986, 2011-2015, with WHO winning 2011 ONSW Club-of-the-Year under his presidency. He has also acted as an ONSW delegate in 2016-2018. Steve has organised many events including Metro League and SSS events. He has passed on his experience acting as ‘chief mentor’ in 2017-2018 and has been recognised for his contributions to WHO through 8 Hank Awards.

Ian Miller

Life Member from 2025

Ian Miller started orienteering in Canberra in 1976 with earliest results found on 8th August 1976! He was recruited to join WHO by Owen Sharpe and Chis Crane during Hills District Orange Blossom Festival in 1988. Ian has been heavily involved with the club; being the Treasurer from 2000 to 2002 and again 2008 to 2011, Vice-President in 2015 and 2016, President in 2016 to 2018 and Newsletter editor from 2007 to 2013. He was also Turkey Trot planner from 2007 to 2013. He has set and controlled countless numbers of events. He not only has been helping the club but took on the role of planning director for ONSW between 2011 and 2014 and is now part of the urban orienteering working group 2025.

Fun fact, he is an “Sydney Summer Series (SSS) original” by having attended one event in the first year of the SSS in 1992! He has currently completed 488 and counting and also received SSS special award for the 2024-2025 season.

His aims are to make it to the start of the M100 class and win the Chris Crane cup! He is a social orienteer who is becoming more and more urban each year.
